There are certain things that just evoke America<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0– <\/span>Baseball.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Uncle Sam. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Cor<\/span>n fields.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Apple pie. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But w<\/span>hat if we told you one of these iconic\u00a0<\/span>symbols<\/span>\u00a0does<\/span>n\u2019<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>really<\/span><\/i>\u00a0belong on the list?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Turns out there\u2019s nothing all that American a<\/span>bout<\/span>\u00a0apple pie. In fact,<\/span>\u00a0neither apples\u00a0<\/span>or\u00a0<\/span><\/i>pie originated in North America: the ancient Egyptians\u00a0<\/span>get<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0credit for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>creating pie<\/span>, and<\/span>\u00a0modern\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>pples<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>originated<\/span>\u00a0in the mountains of Kazakhstan<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>then\u00a0<\/span>spread along the Silk Roads from Central Asia to Europe<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While early pies were\u00a0<\/span>made with meat<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Emily Upton, writing for\u00a0<\/span>Today I Found Out<\/span>, reports that the first recorded apple pie<\/span>\u00a0recipe\u00a0<\/span>was<\/span>\u00a0from England\u00a0<\/span>way back\u00a0<\/span>in 1381. These early recipes bear little resemblance to the apple pie<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0we know today\u2014they rarely called for sugar\u00a0<\/span>(which was an expensive, luxury ingredient at that time)\u00a0<\/span>and came served in a pastry that went by the rather u<\/span>n<\/span>appetizing name of \u201ccoffin.\u201d This \u201ccoffin\u201d was not meant to be eaten; it was really just\u00a0<\/span>a container to hold the filling, sort of the Middle Ages version\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0a<\/span>\u00a0paper plate.\u00a0<\/span>The first apple pie recipe that resembles the pie we know and loves today, with a sweetened filling and a lattice top, appeared in a <\/span>1514\u00a0<\/span>Dutch cookbook<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So how did apple pie<\/span>\u2014which is so deeply rooted in Europe\u2014<\/span>become synonymous with America?\u00a0<\/span>European-style apple trees arrived on American shores with the Jamestown colonists, who brought\u00a0<\/span>seeds<\/span>\u00a0and cuttings to plant in the New World. (And here\u2019s a\u00a0<\/span>fun fact<\/span>\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span>What\u2019s Cooking America<\/span><\/i>: In\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>olonial times, apples were\u00a0<\/span>sometimes\u00a0<\/span>called\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>winter bananas.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>) As colonists pushed westward, they brought apples with them<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Upton credits\u00a0<\/span>Johnny Appleseed\u00a0<\/span>with cementing the apple as part of American folklore, as he roamed the frontier planting\u00a0<\/span>acres upon acres of apple\u00a0<\/span>orchards. By the 19<\/span>th<\/span> century, American farmers had\u00a0<\/span>plant<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0and cross-pollinat<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0trees to develop an astounding\u00a0<\/span>14,000 different varieties<\/span>\u00a0of apples.\u00a0<\/span>And of course, many of those varieties were perfect for making pie.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly as intriguing as the history of the apple in America is<\/span>\u00a0the history of the phrase \u201cas American as apple pie.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Upton cites a newspaper article in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>1902 that\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span>\u00a0\u201cno pie-eating people can be permanently vanquished\u201d and a 1924 ad in the\u00a0<\/span>Gettysburg Times<\/span><\/i>\u00a0selling \u201cNew\u00a0<\/span>Lestz<\/span>\u00a0Suits that are as American as apple pie.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>The phrase became such a part of the American fabric that by World War II, soldiers\u00a0<\/span>told<\/span>\u00a0journalists that they were fighting for \u201cmom and apple pie.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apple pie may have become a symbol of all that\u2019s good about Americans, but there is a dessert that\u2019s actually a better candidate for the title. <\/span>W<\/span>hile it might not have the same ring, a more apt phrase might be \u201cAs American as a blueberry cobbler.\u201d <\/span>Unlike the apple, b<\/span>lueberries\u2014along with\u00a0<\/span>black cherries, strawberries, cranberries, and elderberries\u2014are native to North America<\/span>, and cobblers are a uniquely American creation. These fruit and pastry desserts, along with regional variations with such colorful names as Bettys, pandowdies, grunts, slumps, buckles, <\/span>sonkers<\/span>, crumbles, and crisps were created by early American settlers who turned to the simple ingredients they had on hand to create <\/span>satisfying\u00a0<\/span>desserts. Nevertheless, it\u2019s apple pie that\u00a0<\/span>became the apple of Americans\u2019 eyes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
